You may have noticed the Day of the Dead Makeup Shoot I posted recently. My good friend who is also a professional photographer, Valentin Fernandez (owner of VFR photography) asked me if I wanted to do the makeup for a Day of the Dead theme photoshoot & if I also wanted to be the model. Because I am a lover of all things October, Fall & spooky, I was ecstatic!

Traditionally, Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday to honor friends and family members who have passed away and help support their spiritual journey. People visit the graves of loved ones, set up altars with favorite food and treats of their loved ones and also wear skull masks or paint their faces. A skull can be decorated with bright colors to shed a more positive light and to help overcome ones fear of death.

This shoot was very fun and it gave me a chance to use my artistic abilities. Doing makeup is my creative outlet. Any chance I get to paint someone’s face, whether it’s a sugar skull or a simple daytime look, I love every second of it. I used Ben Nye crème makeup on my face in black, white and red. The gems around my eyes are self-adhesive ones from Michaels and I bought my long, feather lashes from the Spirit Halloween store in Santa Rosa, which by the way, carries a great selection of crazy lashes.
